March 18-22 | Honor Avi Kwa Ame Broadwalk
March 18, 2024 @ 2:00 pm – March 22, 2024 @ 11:00 am
Originally scheduled in October 2023 (but cancelled due to concerns over a possible government shutdown), we are excited to announce the rescheduling of the Honor Avi Kwa Ame Broadwalk!
Designated as a national monument in March of 2023, Avi Kwa Ame (Ah-Vee-Kwah-Meh) is the Mojave name for Spirit Mountain and surrounding lands in southern Nevada. The Monument consists of roughly 443,671 acres of BLM public land in Southern Clark County, Nevada. The entire area is considered sacred by the ten Yuman speaking tribes as well as the Hopi and Chemehuevi Paiute. For the Yuman tribes, the area is empirically tied to their creation, cosmology, and well-being.
Designation as a national monument gives this culturally- and ecologically-vital land permanent protection from destructive mining and natural resource extraction activities. It also creates an unbroken series of protected landscapes stretching from Death Valley National Park in California to Lake Mead National Recreation Area in southern Nevada.
Join Broads and partners from Friends of Avi Kwa Ame, the Fort Mojave Indian Tribe, and others to explore the area’s spectacular beauty, wide open spaces, unique biodiversity, birdwatching, and more! Learn why it is vital to preserve these sacred lands and fragile ecosystems and find out more about Indigenous co-management.
We’ll stay in the Cottonwood Cove Campground on the shores of Lake Mohave in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. The campground has restrooms and can accommodate tent camping, small campers, and camper vans. Showers are available for $5 at the nearby RV resort. There is no potable water available at the campground. Participants will need bring water for personal use. The price includes all meals—all you need to bring are extra snacks and happy hour beverages.
Price: $395
