Great Old Broads for Wilderness Event Studies the Untold Environmental Impacts of the Proposed Border Wall.
Durango, CO—Great Old Broads for Wilderness (Broads) will host a Borderlands Broadwalk in the Chiricahua Mountains of southeast Arizona, near the border of New Mexico and Mexico, on April 25-20, 2019. The goals of the event are to: raise public awareness of the untold story of the environmental impacts of the proposed border wall, specifically how it would destroy habitat connectivity and stress threatened and endangered species; and to build a diverse citizen advocacy movement for the protection of Borderlands’ biodiversity and keeping habitat corridors.
Borderlands Broadwalk is a sold-out event where more than 60 attendees (primarily women) will come together from across the nation. The event will take place at the Southwest Environmental Center in southeast Arizona. Attendees will have the opportunity to tour first hand the Borderlands region where the border wall is being proposed and to hear science-based presentations from Borderland conservation experts, including:
- Kevin Bixby, Executive Director of the Southwest Environmental Center, speaking on wildlife and water impacts, habitat connectivity issues, and border wall history
- Diana Hadley, President of the Northern Jaguar Project, will lead a field trip to areas already impacted by the border wall and discuss Jaguar habitat and habitat connectivity threats to endangered species and other wildlife, including Gila monsters, ocelots, Sonoran pronghorn antelope, pumas, bears, the Mexican wolf, and more
- Sergio Avila-Villegas, wildlife biologist and Local Outdoors Coordinator for Sierra Club, will lead a field trip to an area where the border wall is proposed to discuss cross-border wildlife issues, as well as, diversity in the conservation movement.
