Focus areas:
- Land restoration
- Wilderness monitoring
- Public education and awareness building
Projects:
- Commenting on the proposed Resource Management Plan (RMP) for the National Forest Service covering the Grand Mesa, Uncompahgre, and Gunnison National Forests.
- Wilderness monitoring for both the National Forest Service and the BLM field office.
- Cooperative letter writing campaigns with local environmental and activism groups on issues pertinent to the local and national Broadband mission.
- Stewardship project of reseeding and replanting on closed trails where the closure is ignored. We collect native seed during the summer months, rework the soil, and then plant in the fall.
- Partnered with Mt Garfield 8th grade class, BLM, Colorado Archaeology Society and the Northern Ute Tribe for a field day learning about the value and preservation of rock art. The students learned about the meaning, looked for ways they could help mitigate vandalism and helped clean charcoal writing off the rock walls. This was the 2nd year in what hopes to be an annual event.
Wishlist:
- Develop a strong core team.
- Develop a series of new projects that engage a greater number of broadband members.
- Book club that focuses on the question of What is Activism?, that combines reading/podcasts-writing skills and discussion
- Education project that helps new home owners near wilderness to understand it means to live next to wilderness. (targets a new housing development of 80-100 homes that is being built next to the BLM Wilderness Study area in Fruita, CO)
