The Wilderness Act of 1964 celebrated its 60th birthday in September. With the stroke of President Lyndon B. Johnson’s pen, the National Wilderness Preservation System was created and the nation’s first Wilderness areas were designated. Nine of those were in Oregon. 60 years later, Oregon now has 47 designated Wilderness areas. Oregon Wild’s Sami Godlove discusses the Wilderness Act, how Wilderness is an important tool to combat the climate and biodiversity crises, and current Wilderness protection campaigns across the state.
Sami Godlove is the Central Oregon Field Associate for Oregon Wild and works on Oregon Wild’s public lands campaigns to protect Wilderness and Wild & Scenic Rivers. He is also on the Central and Eastern Oregon Bitterbrush Broads and Bros leadership team. Sami was born and raised in Bend and when he’s not working to protect Wilderness, he’s likely out enjoying Oregon’s spectacular Wilderness areas!
