Short Description of Activity
Dr. John Talberth presented research about industrial logging practices and how they are the #1 source of greenhouse gas emissions in Oregon. Industrial timber plantations store 50% less carbon than wild forests. Clearncuts, logging roads, herbicides and tree plantations together deplete Oregon forest’s natural sequestration cycles and carbon sinks and replace them with “dead zones” of net carbon emissions. These practices further worsen climate change by 8increasing the thereat of wildfire and are one of the largest threats to clean drinking water.
Reflection/Evaluation
The goal was to educate Broads about this issue and we had five Broads show up out of a total of about 100 attendees. We learned that we need to modernize the state’s antiquated Forest Practices Act to make climate smart forestry the law and not the exception, Safeguard drinking water at risk from clearcuts and spraying of toxic chemicals, eliminate subsidies and tax breaks for carbon intensive forest practices and expedite the conversion of tree plantations back into climate resilient natural forests.
