Key Partners: Collaborative stakeholders
Landscape/area: Cibola National Forest (1616435 acres)

Short Description of Activity

The purpose of the field trip is to introduce the stakeholders to the need for recommended wilderness status. There are those in the collaborative who want to cut the small area in half to accommodate a mountain biking circuit around part of the Sandia Mountain. However, their request doesn’t make sense in light of the terrain right before the Tres Pistoles area because it is part of ABQ Open Space and is too bouldery to accommodate mountain bikes. Also east of the Tres Pistoles area goes though a Hawkwatch protected area and an education center for the Natural History Museum and for all Albuquerque area 5th graders. The trail would imperil the students because it intersects their educational trails in several places.

Reflection/Evaluation

Education will be achieved, but whether or not the collaborative can come to a consensus about the decision remains to be seen.
