Short Description of Activity
This quarter’s wildlife advocacy and engagement was diverse including: monthly CO BB wildlife calls, GLO webinar with Delia Malone re: wolves; personal conversations with members re: wolf reintroduction; learning about Kerry Donovan’s state legislation re: wolf reintroduction; organizing/coordinating our initial engagement with the Bighorn Sheep monitoring stewardship project (through Mountain Studies Institute;) staying updated on Wildlife Corridor Conservation Act; communication with ranchers re: ROCC spaghetti dinner and presentation re: wolf reintroduction (which has been cancelled due to Covid-19, but relationship building = valuable regardless;) commenting in writing (2) and via telephone testimony (1) re: State Trails Non-motorized planning grant application submitted by Colorado Plateau Mountain Bike Association (COPMOBA) with Ridgway Area Trails (RAT:) written comments (2) to Region 2 USFS re: draft and final versions of the Trails Stewardship Strategy document; review OHV State Trails grants; communication with partners listed in key partners above; reviewing CPW’s wildlife emphasis area maps and chart;
Reflection/Evaluation
Lots to reflect upon but here’s the key points: pleased with submission of comments to USFS re: Trails Stewardship Strategy with some positive effect on the final draft; very pleased with comments – written and verbal – to State Trails Committee re: COPMOBA/RAT trails planning grant with noticeable results that we (and BHA) have been invited to join the stakeholder group!!! Progress made on coordinating the BH sheep monitoring project and building relations with partners; disappointed about cancellation of ROCC event as was so hoping to gather ranchers, wildlife advocates and general public for the presentation/discussion re: wolf reintroduction; some confusion/perceived uncertainty within membership about moving forward with wolf reintroduction ballot initiative given Donovan’s bill, documented wolf pack in Craig area, and individual wolf sighted in Jackson county.
