Short Description of Activity
Attended quarterly meeting of the Maine Climate Council, Hannah Pingree Director. The council is divided into three working groups: emergency management, community resilience planning and public health. The council is working to provide technical assistance to communities, act as a clearing house for data, provide funding mechanisms to incentivize communities to develop resilience plans and to educate the public about the effect of climate change on health and resources.
Reflection/Evaluation
The most relevant to our Broadband were the discussions around nature-based solutions. For those of us who live on the coast the discussion of the role of salt-marshes and seaweed habitats in sequestering carbon affirms our choice of our water quality monitoring service project which is now in the second year. Maine has the goal of reducing emissions by 45%. Maine is the most forested state in the US (90%) but 93% of that land is privately owned. One of the major goals of the Council is to conserve more land. Next meeting is in Sept. I will encourage our Broadband to get involved more involved on the state level.
