Key Partners: Salem Sound Coastwatch
Short Description of Activity
Met with new Granite Broads member who works with Salem Sound Coastwatch in Salem, MA. Walked North River locations to view continuing sources of pollution from past and current industrial use near the mouth of the river. With climate change, experiencing more frequent storms beyond capability of land to absorb as well as winter salt water flooding of banks and streets. Mary Spitzer works with the organization above to plant and maintain a rain garden barrier planting along the commercial side of the river. Catches water from either runoff or flooding to filter naturally. Planted with salt resistant varieties but needs weeding, etc. periodically.
Reflection/Evaluation
Organization is a great source for info on natural phenomena in MA coastal estuaries. Sent Linda links to their newsletters and suggestion that we consider having the Director speak at a Granite Broads meeting. Good example of stewardship option with physical distancing.
