Short Description of Activity

Five members of Granite Broads (including one visitor from Maine) met by Zoom to discuss issues, write individual emails to representatives. We shared strategies (e.g. identifying yourself as a voting constituent of the representative, mentioning Great Old Broads early in the communication, including the reason why you cared about the legislation or a story about your connection to the issue). We paused for 15 minute fun breaks that included Linda sharing her ancient post card collection.

Reflection/Evaluation

This was an experiment to see if writing individual letters together would make us more likely to do this kind of routine advocacy. One member signed off early, saying she’d learned this wasn’t her cup of tea. Others stayed and said the event was both fun and educational. One member said she’d just written five letters which was more than she’d sent in years. Some of the letters were thank you’s to representatives who’d voted in favor of the Great Outdoors Act. Also wrote to one Senator with a strong environmental legislative history who didn’t vote saying we trusted this was because he was in Massachusetts campaigning and knew we could count on him in future. We’ll meet again next month.
