Short Description of Activity
Grand Canyon Trust – Talia Boyd in Gallup, NM – and panel members Tommy Rock, Phd (Navajo), Anna Rondon NM (Navajo), and Twa-le Abrahamson-Swam (Washington State). Questions and discussion included what are pathways of exposure from Uranium Mining – water, soil, air, plants (animals eat the plants, people eat the animals), miners took laundry home and passed on dust, etc. What are studies have been done and what studies are needed? Bottom Line is that cancers are prevalent in the pathways from Uranium Mining. One even called past and current policy re Uranium and indigenous peoples as “genocidal.” and further that indigenous peoples are not fully human beings.
Reflection/Evaluation
Our indigenous friends are speaking up and asking for equal treatment – or even better treatment because of colonialism. The Sierra Club has turned to 95% equality and discrimination, etc,, and environmental issues have all but disappeared. But not our local group and not as high a percentage in the Chapter.
