Letter of Declaration on Pumice Plain submitted to Susan Jane Brown with Western Environmental Law Center.
Reflection/Evaluation
The goal of the action is to prevent the U.S. Forest Service from constructing a road through the Class I Research Area on the Pumice Plain of the Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. The proposed road would impact many long-term (40+ years) ecological studies of landscape response to a catastrophic disturbance. The litigation seeks to coerce the U.S. Forest Service to prepare an environmental impact statement and examine management practices of Spirit Lake. It is our position that the U.S. Forest Service has relied on an inadequate environmental assessment to justify constructing a road across the Pumice Plain. This was my first declaration that I have ever submitted, and I have received much needed assistance from Katya, Micky, Felice, and Susan Jane in preparing this document. Time will tell if the goal was met or not.
