Short Description of Activity
Finally, I get a chance to make public comment before the Rules Commitee. After the SJR 03 expert witnesses, followed by those against the bill (mainly ranchers and oil and gas industry), several of us who were hoping to make addition al comments in favor of SJR 03 got our chance to speak (2 minutes is all this committee allowed).
Reflection/Evaluation
The bill was amended by the Rules committee chairman but his amendment was not successful. Over the following weekend Senator Antoinette Sedillo-Lopez, the bill’s primary sponsor, and The Green Amendment author (our courageous leader, Maya Van Rossum) crafted language along with favorable support from the NMGA steering committee. We all hoped this language would satisfy the majority Democrat committee members enough to vote Do Pass. They voted on this amendment to SJR 03 and it was sent on to the Judiciary Committee with a Do Pass majority vote on Feb. 8. There it stalled for the next six weeks through the end of the session.
