Short Description of Activity
Robyn Cascade; Anne Dal Vera; Nancy Frost & Sherry Schenk facilitated this CARE:
Join fellow Broadband leaders, Grassroots Leadership Program staff and Executive Director Shelley Silbert for this conversation on diversity, equity, inclusion and justice within Broads. We will discuss the following:
Why we must break down barriers and find ways to lift up the voices of indigenous communities, communities of color, and other disenfranchised people in our movement.
How these principles fit into Broads’ vision and mission.
What Broads’ Equity & Justice committee has accomplished thus far
Our plans to continue to speak up and use Broads’ voice to give fodder to the environmental justice movement.
This is a unique CARE call, different from any we’ve done before. We may be digging into some sensitive areas and want to make sure our leaders know the call will be a safe, judgement-free space where leaders can express their thoughts and feelings openly, all viewpoints are accepted, and there are no “right” or “wrong” opinions. We hope you’ll join us for this important conversation.
Reflection/Evaluation
As our first DEIJ-related CARE call of 2021, it went well. Leaders were engaged and we didn’t receive much push back on mission creep or other concerns with Broads starting this work. The shares went really long and we had to cut off the group share after breakout rooms at the end, which was a bummer. We also lost some attendees when the breakout happened, which made it hard to create groups of 3-4.
Next time we’ll make the intros shorter, maybe either add where their from/Broadband in the chat or rename ea. person to show this, then go directly into answering an opening question.
