Key Partners: Oregon Wild, Cascadia Wildlands, Willamette National Forest Staff
Landscape/area: Willamette National Forest (1681674 acres)
Short Description of Activity
We met with several district rangers and managers from the WNF to begin to understand how and why they do fuels treatment from thinning to fuel breaks to prescribed burning. We visited several areas where they are doing the Oakridge/West Fir Fuels Reduction project (OWTFR).
Reflection/Evaluation
The purpose was to improve communication and understanding between land managers and environmentalists and to share our perspectives with the USFS folks. It was decided that this will be a twice a year field trip – spring and fall – to build on the relationships we started and keep lines of communication open. I learned a lot and my bigest take-away was how complicated management is for these folks.

Representatives from Cascadia Wildlands, Oregon Wild, Forest Web and the Willamette Valley Broadband meet with rangers from four districts in the Willamette National Forest, the Forest Supervisor and members of their interdisciplinary teams to begin improve relationships and understanding between the groups. Here we’re looking at a prescribed burn done just three weeks ago.
