Short Description of Activity

We documented data for the Forest Management Plan for Seminary Hill with Friends of Seminary Hill and a local Girl Scout troop. Jan Strong from the Seattle Broadband joined us and we appreciated her expertise as a biologist.

Reflection/Evaluation

The goal of the activity was to learn how to measure trees using our DBH tape and Forestry Stick. We measured the diameter and the height of the trees within the respected zones using the DBH tape and Forestry Stick. We documented the percent of plant species as high, medium, or trace in our zones. We had trouble with our INaturalist app and need to practice in order to become more efficient at identifying plant species. It was an excellent introduction to field checking and both the Friends of Seminary Hill and the Girl Scout Troop want to get together with us to hike. Although it was over an hour’s drive, it was a great day and we now are able to measure both the height and the diameter of trees.
