Short Description of Activity
BLM 75th Anniversary Symposium
Today the Bureau of Land Management celebrates its 75th Anniversary with a symposium that will cover topics important to the Bureau’s future. These discussions will continue in the coming months, culminating in a final celebration of the 75th Anniversary in December.
Reflection/Evaluation
This was mostly useful for the links to various organizations and what their evaluation tools, maps, etc. are. It was also great to get to who the various players in the “new” BLM are, and where their priorities lie. It was telling that one whole symposium was dedicated to ranchers and sustainable range management looks like. There was not much if any pushback from the attendees on getting cattle off public lands. Lots of discussion of the importance of sustainable management practices with the end goal being sustainable economics for rural communities versus the importance of overall sustainable outcomes for lands, watersheds and wildlife of all kinds. The culture is changing really slowly, and there is a lot of pushback from ranchers, etc. Jim Baca, a former head of the BLM and NM governor emphasized the need for science based decisions, and for detaching BLM management from being controlled by state legislators versus federal best management practices. I will try to attach a couple of links on contrasting opinions and analysis.

I’m not sure these links will work, but the articles were really depressing, but worth reading.
