Short Description of Activity

The GMUG Forest Plan was the focus of our advocacy work this quarter. Attended coalition meetings for overall plan and for Wild & Scenic River designation. Provided coalition data and technical comments re: botanical Species of Conservation Concern. Correspondence and/or meetings with USFS & CPW staff (one very interesting one regarding drones!) Attend two USFS/GMUG webinars and one open house regarding the draft forest plan and DEIS. Communicated with Broads taking leadership roles among coalition partners. Spoke/corresponded with individual County Commissioners as well as attending (and commenting at) BOCC GMUG forest special work session.

Reflection/Evaluation

Ecstatic that one member has assumed the responsibility of representing Broads at the Wild & Scenic coalition meetings and another has taken on advising partners regarding botanical species!!! Finally sharing the load after 4 years of flying solo on this project!! Feeling positive about raising awareness of the forest plan revision as well as the Community Conservation Proposal focused on special designations across the forest submitted to the GMUG from our conservation coalition. Best news is that we finally have the support of the Ouray BOCC for two recommended wilderness landscapes – Baldy and Bear Creek – both additions to the western side of the existing Uncompahgre Wilderness. Not making as much progress with Hayden Mountain, but we’re not giving up!!! Seem to have some support from CPW, but time will tell. Also while advocating for habitat protection and wildlife corridors, NSJBB is forging very positive relations with CPW’s new Area Wildlife Manager and Terrestrial Biologist for area 18 (Montrose Office)
