Short Description of Activity
After a covid hiatus, we were able to once again hold our outdoor 7th annual retreat along the Gila River. Participants thoroughly enjoyed camping and safely gathering while sharing readings, soaking in hot springs and swimming in the river, and of course comaraderie. Carol Fugagli of Upper Gila Watershed Alliance gave an informal talk on climate change and we also discussed cattle impact issues in the Gila National Forest. A hike was offered during the second day. Our service project this year focused on planting native plants as part of a restoration in a campground close to the Gila Cliff Dwelling Natl. Monument. For this service project we volunteered with the Natl. Park Service and were led by NPS staff. Arizona Conservation Crew members also worked on this project with us. We also wrote postcards to public officials regarding public land advocacy issues.
Reflection/Evaluation
It went well and was enjoyed by all participants. There were somewhat fewer participants this year than previous years, but given covid we did not push attendance as much as in the past – plus our campground venue did not hold as many people. We met one of our Las Cruces area members who was able to attend, and we hope to plan a trip south of Silver City this winter to build this relationship. Our National Park Service contact showed us the good results of our 2019 service project.
