Short Description of Activity
This was a very thorough and in depth training on the River Watch organization, its history and goals/objectives. Very concrete training was provided on all the protocols used in sampling and testing. How the data is used in Colorado to make decisions regarding the rivers was presented. The participants were from all parts of the state and all ages from the youngest at 10 years to senior citizens. The training was held at Camp Cedaredge in Cedaredge, Colorado. It was a very valuable review for this volunteer.
Reflection/Evaluation
While I participated in a similar training before being approved to be a volunteer with River Watch, the amount of information provided is so extensive that this review was extremely valuable. The data provided to the organization is only as good as the consistency of the procedures and protocols employed by volunteers. The goal/objective of the training is to ensure that there is that consistency. The organization builds in several steps to ensure continued reliability and consistency. For example, sending “unknowns” to each participant twice yearly to test accuracy of protocols being used. Site visits from agency representatives are also planned this year.
