Short Description of Activity

Volunteer Willow planting along stream shore at the Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge. Thirty volunteers were present, Laurie Kerr and Barb Fox Kilgore from Cascade Volcanoes BB attended. Area located on the Columbia River, 10 miles east of Vancouver, Washington, the 1,049-acre Steigerwald Lake National Wildlife Refuge consists of riverine flood plain habitat, semi-permanent wetlands, cottonwood-dominated riparian corridors, pastures, and remnant stands of Oregon white oak. Planting was difficult and slow due to rocky conditions of the soil.

Reflection/Evaluation

Planted willows for 2.5 hours and then volunteers taken on a brief tour on the dyke trail to view the ongoing work in re-establishing this wetland area. Work will continue with the hope of opening the area to the public by spring of 2022. Laurie connected with coordinator of Friends of the Columbia for future partnership in potential Stewardship projects.
Rewarding to work on a project that enhances a local public land that will provide outdoor opportunities and education.
