Short Description of Activity
Initiated our broadband’s monthly Wednesday hikes. The purpose is to gather for an easy or moderate hike and in addition to the social component it is hoped this can also help with getting folks more involved in our various activities and advocacy. For now we are meeting at a downtown Silver City coffee shop and going from there. Based on the questionnaire sent to members during the pandemic, hiking was the potential Aldo’s broadband activity that garnered the most positive response. At this point we are trying the concept of monthly hikes out, to gauge interest and participation.
Reflection/Evaluation
A fairly easy hike on Boston Hill in town was chosen. Two folks showed up, in addition to the two steering committee folks leading the hike. Interestingly, both participants were from Las Cruces rather than from the local area. One was a GOBW member and one was not. The choice of hike locations might have had a bearing on this. This was a modest, but positive start and participants enjoyed the walk while visiting along the way. While gathering at the coffee shop we had our newsletter and brochure available for browsing. It will be interesting to see how the monthly hike concept evolves.
