Short Description of Activity
This was a hike on the Tumalo Canal trail head. Part of the hike was to observe Old growth Juniper but also to look at the 400 acres of land that the Dept. of State Lands has been asked to be purchased by THornburg REsort.
Reflection/Evaluation
Besides seeing old growth Junipers and being taught all kinds of information about plants that survive in the desert we also observed the area where State Lands has been asked by Thornburg to purchase 400 acres. Our leader, Scott, did a great job of doing advocacy regarding why this sale should not happen. The area is between two wildlife winter grazing areas, as well as the resort would use up to 6 million gallons of water per day. The plan is to build over 1000 homes, plus 425 short term rentals, 3 golf courses along with 6 artificial lakes. To say we are opposed to this sale is an understatement.
