Short Description of Activity
Watched a movie about the 1961 action by the Barrow Inupiat people to protest the arrest of two of them for hunting ducks in the spring. Then there was a discussion of environmental justice and indiginous led land and water protection . Wonderful participation by Inupiat elders and Inupiat advocates; some good discussions of native versus invasive species and what climate change is doing to the Arctic peoples, to food security etc.
Reflection/Evaluation
I wanted to learn, I sure did learn, I have more to learn. I had been aware of the problems with the Migratory Bird Treaty and subsistence resource gathering from my decade living in indigenous communities in the Arctic but didn’t know why they didn’t work to change the Treaty rather than just say we won’t prosecute you for spring duck hunting unless…. Also heard great comments from local people and local advocates. Still learning though. And I won a great video (Oil on Ice) and a neat scarf, hurray!
