Short Description of Activity
We read and discussed “Sightlines: A conversation with the Natural World” by Kathleen Jamie
Reflection/Evaluation
The goal of the activity was to share discussion about the book and other related topics. The group was held virtually. Kathleen Jamie is actually a well-known poet in Scotland/UK and her book is more of a travel book about various adventures she has taken and places she has explored. She is very challenging to listen to because of her Scottish Brogue, but she has a very distinct and beautiful writing style that posts a vivid picture to the reader. She covered such topics as Orca Whales, the islands of St. Kilda, Scotland, and Rona Island, Scotland. She also explored the plight of the Leach’s Petrels, which are in serious decline and the research being done in order to monitor that species. Another chapter explored her journey to Iceland and Greenland among the glaciers and ice bergs.
