Reflection/Evaluation
The letters were excellent, covering
Letter #1: BLM/USFS Mining Regulations, including Tribal Consultation. Detailed recommendations for how BLM and Forest Service mining laws and regulations need to be updated to protect communities, lands and waters.
Letter #2: Financial Assurance for Mining. These comments discuss how regulations can be updated to ensure mining companies are held financially responsible for clean-up through CERCLA.
Letter #3: Clean Water Act Loopholes. This comment details how changes in regulations can close loopholes in the Clean Water Act implementation that allow harmful mine waste disposal.
Letter #4: Circular Economy (Recycling & Demand Reduction) of Minerals. This letter discusses a number of different policies that can help reduce the demand for new minerals including recycling and reuse.
Letter #5: International & Due Diligence Standards. This letter discusses the need for standards and transparency in the international system of minerals.
Letter #6: Uranium Mining Issues. This letter is specifically about the impact of uranium and actions that must be taken around standards and regulations for mining this unique material.
I was glad to see the inclusion of letters on a circular economy (recycle, reuse) and on environmental justice.
