Key Issue: Livestock Grazing Management
Activity Type: Trainings (WALTS, CAREs/GLOWs, research, conferences, workshops, etc.)
Short Description of Activity
Amy Stuart and myself went to Baker City to meet with Suzanne Fouty to learn how to monitor riparian/ stream areas for our upcoming grazing monitoring project in the Ochoco’s.
Reflection/Evaluation
WE spent 4 days training (2 partial for travel and 2 full days) with Suzanne measuring stream channels. Because of the heat and our small group we opted to commute from Suzanne’s house in Baker City to the project area in the Sumpter area. We primarily measured Camp and Trout Creeks tributaries to the NF Burnt River. We also looked at a dry section of Gimlet Creek to look at options to measure dry stream channels. In reaches varying from 200 – 500 feet in increments of 5 or 10 feet distances apart from each measurement, we measured wetted width, depths at 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4 width, max depth and undercut banks. We measured ungrazed and grazed sections. The ungrazed area was a vacant allotment and had a lot more willows and alders and generally more undercut banks and higher quality undercut banks. Suzanne will be developing forms for us to utilize in this work.
