Short Description of Activity

Loren and Kathy submitted comments on this Public Scoping Period. The original EIS was found by a court to be deficient, and the BLM had to reopen the process to correct the deficiencies. In addition to preparing individual letters, Alaska Soles also signed on to a partnership letter by the Trustees for Alaska, who were the ones that were successful in the lawsuit on the first EIS.

Reflection/Evaluation

This one was a bit of a bear and involved chocolate and cold pizza to get us through the process. Both Loren and I have lived In this area, an know deep down to our toes, what an amazing area they are trying to marginalize to justify building a road across one of the biggest roadless areas in Alaska. The burn on this issue is that a road is being rushed through to a mining district, where none of the mines have even filed a mining plan yet. Even if the mines don’t get approved, the area and subsistence way of life will be permanently altered in this area. If the mines are approved, the people, animals and landscape will be permanently effected by the mining activities. Mines like these do not have a good track record for keeping their pollution and impacts isolated to the mining footprint.

Sometimes you just have to resort to chocolate to get you over the finish line.
