Key Issue: Doesn’t apply
Activity Type: Relationship Building with non-white and/or frontline communities (relational meetings, attending events, community support, etc.)
Key Partners: HAP, Ute Mtn Ute and Southern Ute Tribes, EMERGE, Town of Ridgway, Ouray County; CIRC; WORC
Measurable Outcomes
Outcome 1: contacts with frontline folks (21 calls, texts, emails)
Short Description of Activity
Ongoing contact with relations at Ute Mtn Ute Tribe specifically regarding the renaming of a local gulch and networking between County Commission and tribal leader and Elder Committee; outreach to Southern Ute councilwomen to connect with EMERGE/Anna Lee Vargas; planning with Hispanic Affairs Project regarding possible outdoor offerings for their members; collaboration with Town of Ridgway re: redesign of local park/visitor center to elevate/feature Ute history, culture and continuing presence in our community that sits on traditional lands of the Ute people (Nuche.) Some hours also attributed to CARE call planning and Equity and Justice Committee meetings. Attend Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition meetings (virtual and in-person) as well as the White Caucus of Western Organization of Resource Councils
Reflection/Evaluation
Highly favorable connection between Ouray County Commission and Ute Mtn Ute councilman and Elder Committee who held a joint virtual meeting to rename a local gulch, however later learned that the Tribal spokespeople may not have had proper authority to speak on behalf of Tribe. NSJBB is uncertain of the outcome of the renaming. To our knowledge Southern Ute councilwomen did not respond to my introduction to Anna at EMERGE. Fruitful conversations continue with HAP staff re: future collaborative events but none have yet come to fruition. Ongoing engagement regarding the Ridgway park/VC redesign is encouraging with a strong advocate on town staff who is passionate about incorporating Ute history/culture in the redesign.
