Outcome 2: Advocacy actions (140 bighorn rack cards distributed)
Short Description of Activity
Delivered, advocated for and confirmed with USFS that Bighorn sheep monitoring signs had been installed at 13 trailheads on the Uncompahgre Forest. Distributed rack cards to jeep rental/tour companies, libraries, visitor centers and outdoor retail stores in Ouray County. Attended meeting with bighorn advocate partners. Spoke with Ouray District (USFS) Range Conservation officer re: Annual Operating Instructions for domestic sheep permittees. Attended webinars re: pika and pollinators. Engaged in prospective fence removal/rebuild project with CPW that was ultimately cancelled due to staff changes.
Reflection/Evaluation
Finally, after over two years of advocacy and negotiation, the Ouray District of USFS, installed the trailhead signs re; the bighorn sheep monitoring program. Sadly, the District Ranger was defensive about the delayed response and there is still need for resolving some potential hard feelings. Range Con never delivered (is yet to deliver) the info he promised back in early July. Always great strategizing and collaborating with BH advocates.
