Short Description of Activity

For the first 30 minutes of our Zoom meeting on November 10 from 7 to 9 pm, I invited Miguel Raimilla, Partnerships Director for EarthCorps, to speak to us about the Earth Corps Program. EarthCorps builds a global community of young leaders trained in ecological restoration. https://www.earthcorps.org

In 1993, Miguel came to Seattle from Chile to help launch EarthCorps. He later joined the founder, Dwight Wilson, in taking the model created in Seattle to multiple countries worldwide. We hoped that we would learn from Miguel about possible ways we might partner with Earth Corps, either through stewardship projects or by providing homestays for their visiting global leaders. After Miguel’s presentation, we had the opportunity to ask questions.

Below is the agenda for the remainder of our meeting on November 10th

AGENDA for our ZOOM Business Meeting on NOVEMBER 10th at 7 pm.
1. Advocacy (Genia)
a. Rally “for the trees” in Portland on November 17th at 11:30 am –See below.
b. The Green River Valley Alliance seeks to protect the Green River Valley, an area along the north border of Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument from ongoing attempts to develop a destructive open-pit mine. The best way to accomplish that is to secure a federal mineral withdrawal through Congress. In order to do so, we will be sending postcards to Cantwell and Murray and writing them at a future meeting. We also have a petition for you to sign here.
c. c. Alpine Lakes Collaborative (Barb Muirhead)

2. Fun (Barb M)

Reflection/Evaluation

The meeting went well. Our Broads enjoyed hearing the presentation on EarthCorps, and they asked Miguel several questions at the end. Miguel indicated that EarthCorps partners with various organizations on stewardship projects so we might do that in the future.

The items on the agenda generated interest and discussion from the 20 Broads on the Zoom call. In addition, Nora Langan brought a timely item to the agenda that day. She said that the Seattle Council was considering hiring a City Urban Forester City Urban, and Nora urged our group to submit public comments on the Forester position by November 15th. Our group was enthusiastic in their support for this position, and many of our members who are Seattle residents did submit comments. In addition, Nora’s agenda item led to a discussion of what other local cities, such as Kirkland, are doing about trees and whether or not these cities have urban foresters on staff. We plan to follow up on this item at our January meeting.
