Key Issue: Wildlife Protection
Activity Type: Advocacy (rallies, lobbying, meeting decision makers, letters/calls/emails)

Short Description of Activity

Discussed issues related to wildlife protection in Alaska, especially relating to the Pebble mine, the proposed Ambler District Access Road, and the proposed Susitna Mining Access Road.

Reflection/Evaluation

I found others concerned about these issues, for them it was either a subsistence issue or an issue relating to their economic livelihood, i.e. guiding. I passed out some information on some of the projects and listened to some people that were working hard on issues we hadn’t dealt with yet such as the proposed Susitna Mining Access Road. I also listened to presentations by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, the Park Service, the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, BLM, the Wild Sheep Foundation, and the State DNR. I feel I established some good relationships with some of the guides who are not necessarily part of our normal network but who, by their very life styles, are deeply involved with conservation issues both in Alaska and throughout the world. I was also impressed with how much meat sharing is done between guides and local indigenous communities and with the Alaska Native Medical Center, to provide native foods to their patients.
