Short Description of Activity

Judith Lopez did a monitoring visit to the Adobe Badlands WSA and found very little new trash to pick up. The same situation exists there, however, in terms of evidence of vehicles being used out on the dunes below the parking lot but entry isn’t occurring from that lot any longer.
Melanie Rees monitored and provided feedback about the Roubideau site. She reported 11 hours of work. Melanie Rees reported on the basis of her monitoring, there was much good news to share: 1) The gate is still closed and locked! The only sign of vehicle intrusions was one set of tracks, in and out on the Winter Mesa trail, likely from the rancher with grazing rights and the combination to the lock. 2) It appears that the vehicle tracks so prevalent last year were created by entering from the Roubideau Canyon Road trailhead. A friend ran 7.5 miles up the Winter Mesa trail and found that the double-track trail does not extend down to the saddle then back up to the USFS boundary. This is good news since illegal traffic entering from Roubideau Canyon Road can be stopped by keeping the lock on the gate. 3) The WSA boundary signs that had been removed and tossed into the brush remain back in place. 4) There was relatively little new garbage in the dispersed campsites along Roubideau Canyon Road. What was there was picked up. 5). She removed a couple of fire rings from under the large cottonwood tree where we park. There’s still a mess – a shovel and box are needed to haul away ashes, broken glass, etc. It will be a dirty job but we don’t want fires under the tree so will be competed at next visit.

Reflection/Evaluation

Both the Roubideau and Adobe Badlands WSA are being monitored and cleaned of trash. Both areas are improving.
