Short Description of Activity
Film Screening of “Elemental”
Reflection/Evaluation
Two Broads attended the February 16 screening of “Elemental” at the Lewis and Clark College in Portland.
Following the film was a panel discussion about the film. The main point is that the loss of property due to wildfire is not a forest management problem. It is a problem of neglecting (or not knowing, or not having the resources) to remove combustible material near structures. As long as it is viewed as a forest problem, someone else is responsible. This film puts the responsibility on communities and residents to protect what they don’t want burned.
It touched on a number of areas that could be documentaries on their own, e.g. prescribed burns, indigenous culture related to fire, science and research, community preparedness, the role of Old Growth forests, and the politics of logging. to name a few. Both Trish and Bondi said the film was amazing and increased their awareness of the scope of the problem.
