Short Description of Activity
The GJ BB has planned its 2023 monthly meetings to be in-person or out in the field exploring. For March, the meeting was a planned hike into Kodel’s Canyon, the furthest western canyon of Colorado National Monument. GJ BB Team Leader Lisa Eckert teamed up with her neighbor Carol Duecker to co-lead this hike and explore a few human history sites, as her neighbor knows more about archaeology and this canyon than me! Six members of GJ BB joined this event on a questionably weather day. Our hike was definitely in a climate window and we were able to see a pre-histore Pit House, and a gold mine explored by Kodel between 1900-1930. Serendipity reigned as the rain, mixed snow, snow did not begin until within an hour of the end of this hike!
Reflection/Evaluation
A successful hike! Interestingly, one member admitted during the hike that he perhaps was not up to the level of this hike; however, having a co-leadership, I was able to remain behind with this member while the other five could see the gold mine further into the canyon with my friend/neighbor leading them. When I was able to be with the entire group, what I loved about this was all the conversation of conservation … very enriching. Photos from my phone will be emailed to Sally within a day.
