Short Description of Activity

We held our April 20th Broadband meeting via Zoom.. We invited Larry Hubbell from the Friends of Arboretum Creek to join us and describe his vision for the restoration of Arboretum Creek in the Seattle Arboretum. Larry hopes to restore the Creek to prevent flooding of the Arboretum’s Japanese Garden and to bring back native plants, birds, and wildlife to the Arboretum. Our Business meeting followed Larry’s presentation. Here is the agenda:
Here is our agenda:
Advocacy
Update on the Snake River Dams (Penelope)
The current goal is to get President Biden to breach the dams by Executive Order. Toward this goal we are having “Breaching Tuesdays” every Tuesday when we want you to call the White House (202-456-1111) and tell Biden to breach the Lower Snake River Dams. In addition, there will be another “listening session” on May 25, and a call will come out for speakers to participate so register to speak as soon as the sign-up opens up.
Advocacy team report (Raelene, Shelley, Kate, and Genia)
Alpine Lakes (Janna and/or Barbara Phalen)
Membership
Broads Central Office is giving us ten free memberships to give out for the year. If you have a friend who might be interested in joining our Broadband, please let me know, and I will contact her about a free membership.
Tabling—We would like to have a table at an event or two this summer to publicize our work and recruit new members. Would you like to be in charge of the table? We have a new table banner and materials (brochures, bookmarks, stickers). Do you have ideas about an event where we might table?
Upcoming Meetings and Responsibilities
Genia Moncada will step down from co-leading the Broadband with Barb and Penelope, but will remain on the Leadership Team for our Broadband.
Barbara Phalen and Kay will host a meeting outside at their house in Renton in June. We will have a potluck lunch so get out your favorite recipes. After lunch and a brief meeting, we will walk to the Cedar River where Barbara or a guest speaker will tell us about plans to build an asphalt plant on the river and how we might work to prevent it. Possible dates for this meeting are Thursday, June 15; Friday June 16; Thursday, June 22; or Friday, June 23. Please come to the meeting prepared to let us know which date works best for you.
August and September Meeting and Activities—Our August and September activities will include a trip/hike to the Capitol State Forest and a speaker on legacy forests. Janka has kindly agreed to host our August Broadband meeting outside at her house in Kirkland. Our meeting would be preceded by a hike in the nearby Bridle Trails State Park. Possible dates for an August meeting at 1 pm are Wednesday, August 2nd; Thursday, August 3rd; or Friday, August 4th.

Reflection/Evaluation

The meeting was successful. Larry’s presentation generated come interesting discussion among the 15 Broads who attended. Larry also invited us to join his nature walks on Sunday mornings and his work parties on Wednesday afternoons. Our Broads seemed interested. We have a number of events planned in the coming months including a Broadband campout in July. Everyone is excited to be getting back together in person.
