Short Description of Activity
We read the lawsuit and subsequent filings re the forest restoration plan that involves restoration thinning in eastern Oregon, which the Broads’ had signed on to. We also read a detailed letter from Wildfire Ecologist Dr Susan Prichard about this lawsuit and proactive forest management. We studied a number of articles about this debate, and the pros and cons of proactive forest management. We then wrote a letter to the Broads’ management regarding our belief that opposing the plan on the basis of a flat NO cutting of large timber was a mistake.
Reflection/Evaluation
Our goal was just to maybe stimulate a debate and discussion regarding proactive forest management, use and abuse of the former “21 inch” rule, and a hope that we could maybe use a more thoughtful approach to forest management issues. As we are deeply invested in family homelands that have suffered from multiple massive woodland fires in recent years, this is a debate that is near to our hearts. We greatly support the preservation of old growth forests but believe that such a big issue cannot be a one size fits all plan. We really just wanted to keep the discussion open and maybe change some minds. However we have not yet heard back from the staff, who we realize are busy and short handed after Lauren and Katya leaving, but we hope this letter will not go unnoticed. We hope that more research into this perspective might be used in developing a future Broads’ national position statement on Forests and Logging.
