Short Description of Activity
Robyn attended the first of 6 BLM SW CO subRAC committee meetings convened to educate the subcommittee and public (that choose to attend) about factors affecting the Gunnison Field Office proposed decision re: domestic sheep grazing permit renewals in high risk bighorn sheep habitat. The subRAC is tasked with making recommendations to BLM regarding how to proceed. Lots of communication with partners and reading before and after the meeting, hence the high pre and post hours.
Reflection/Evaluation
The proposed decision and the premises and EIS upon which it is based are faulty. If the proposed decision stands, bighorn sheep will be at risk based upon science!! I view the formation of the subRAC as a stall technique knowing that the decision will need to be redrafted/revisited and likely an amendment to the BLM Gunnison RMP written. Seems a waste of time to many bighorn advocates and though I (and one other partner) have advocated the BLM SW Manager Stephanie Connolly to move forward with an RMP amendment prior to the subRAC recommendation, she resisted my suggestion.
