Short Description of Activity

8/2/23 Roz and Drove and Hiked in the forest in and around Winn Campground and Mexican Hay Lake looking for Mexican Gray Wolf tracks. Fish & Wildlife website reports packs in the vicinity. Found wolf tracks leading to an old elk carcass. Also, fledgling owls were observed. And a huge herd of elk.

8/6/23 Roz (her husband Buzz driving) and Jenny drove and hiked on Terry Flat on Escudilla Peak looking for Mexican Gray Wolf Tracks. We know there is a pack on Terry Flat. The three of us heard wolves once. We also observed an elk, a fawn hidden hidden in a tree, and cows grazing.

8/8/23 Roz and Jenny drove down Forest Road 25 and stopped along the way to walk dusty roads looking for Mexican Gray Wolf tracks. We found chipmunk and elk tracks. Observed 3 wildfires – one in the Bear Wallow Wilderness and spoke with wildfire volunteers. Saw acres of reforestation in the burned areas from the Wallow Fire in 2011. Jenny especially interested since they are reforesting in the PNF.

Reflection/Evaluation

Many good photos on Jenny’s FB page. There is a great picture of the huge herd of elk taken by Jenny from a long distance. Big thrill was that Roz and I heard wolves – and at the same time, Buzz heard them also from a different location.
