Short Description of Activity

Linda Folkestad and I monitored one day at East Crater (Tr 48, PCT) and 2 days at Deep Lake (tr #33, 33a).

Reflection/Evaluation

We noted a total of 62 people for the entire 3 days. We hiked a total of 18.6 miles. We stayed at the Cultus Creek campground. The road up from East Crater to Cultus Creek campground was horrible but we managed in our SUVs. I will not suggest this same itinerary to others. Deep Lake was absolutely beautiful! We hiked all the way around the lake and noted great big campsites with lots of privacy. Many of the backpackers we met coming up the trail on Friday were hoping for one of these campsites, but were, most likely, disappointed. One woman had a huge aggressive German Shephard who was muzzled (thankfully), but we kept running into her, unfortunately. Other than that, the views of Mt St Helens and Mt Rainer were amazing! The campground was huge with over 100 sites. No camp host, and people were having campfires although there was a burn ban. I’m not surprised there are so many forest fires. I would like to return soon.
