Short Description of Activity
The Mahn Choh mine is being developed with very little environmental review, as it is on Native Lands. They are however moving forward to use a State owned and operated road (The Alcan Highway) to run their ore trucks. This has not gone through any public review process. There are many environmental concerns for operating this mine and processing the ore. The developers along with the State of Alaska appear to be breaking the components into small bits, as a full review would trigger environmental mitigation measures. The project is being represented differently to various regulatory agencies.
Reflection/Evaluation
My goal was to bring attention to this project, as it is receiving very little attention in the largest newspaper in the state. Yes, my goal was met. I also sent copies to the Alaska Milepost Editors and to the Good Sam’s club, another group that supports tourism in Alaska, in hopes that they will use their power to apply pressure on this issue.
