Thursday, August 3rd at 1 pm. We will meet outside at Janka’s house in Kirkland. We will have drinks and snacks to share. After our meeting, we plan to take a walk in nearby Bridle Trails State Park for those who want to stay and are interested. We’ll send Janka’s address.

Monday, August 7 at 7 pm via Zoom. Broads Book Club will meet to discuss That Wild Country: An Epic Journey through the Past, Present, and Future of America’s Public Lands. For those of you who plan a “staycation” this summer, you will find this book to be a perfect read because you can travel to some of America’s most beautiful places without leaving your armchair. Let Penelope know if you want to be added to the Book Club Group email list.

Barbara Muirhead is planning a hike in one of the legacy forests for late August or early September. We will be in touch with details as plans develop.

Reflection/Evaluation

We had a great turn-out for this meeting–fourteen Broads attended plus two guest speakers. The speakers, Bob Baker and Michael Hagen, spoke about their attempts to prevent an asphalt plant from being built on the Cedar River which is near to Barbara Phalen’s house. Bob has documented that if built, the plant will pollute all the water for the city of Renton and kill the salmon in the Cedar River. Also, if a fire were to break out at the plant, the effects would be devastating as there would be no water to quench the fire. Despite the dire consequences of building the plant, King County wants to move forward because the plant is financially beneficial. See the attached minutes for more details.

After we heard the speaker, we shared a lunch of potluck dishes that each of us had brought. During lunch, our member chatted informally with Bob. After lunch, we reconvened to discuss advocacy issues and our upcoming campout in July at Camano Island State Park. All in all, this was a very successful meeting with an interesting and educational speaker and good conversation and camaraderie among the attendees.
