Short Description of Activity

I presented a program entitled, “Journey through Alaska National Wildlife Refuge” weaving history of this area, past and current issues (including National Petroleum; however that isn’t the landscape as I checked above – only the closest topic I could see); and including portions of my 2019 Kongakut River trip. I had developed the program for a summer gig where I am presenting programs on Alaska cruises; this program could easily “double dip” to share info about ANWR with environmental groups.

Reflection/Evaluation

I was able to address areas of confusion for many people, such as Section 1002, and the Willow Project located within the Natl. Petroleum Reserve Area, present timelines of preservation for the Refuge and compare that timeline to the oil development timeline, and discuss the Athabaskan Gwich’in Native Group’s cultural dependency on the Porcupine Herd of migrating caribou. Feedback from the group was very positive.
The program I developed for the cruise ship didn’t have as many oil particulars, nor the Native Settlements Act, and so the prep hours below reflect where I modified the existing program to be more environmentally informative for the Broads. Also – I am guessing on the number of attendees to the program as I invited friends of mine – non-Broads (in hopes they may wish to join). If Chris Jauholly reports a lower number for the Aug 28 meeting, that may indicate the number of members that stayed for the regular meeting.
