Reflection/Evaluation
The project is strongly backed by Alaska’s congressional delegation including the new Democratic Congresswoman Mary Petola. However the studies have shown that because of the way Alaska’s oil tax is structured, allowing direct tax deductions of any such tax due for each dollar invested in oil and gas development anywhere in the state, the State stands to loose over $1 billion before this project would pay anything in taxes. As of early September, the CEO of Conoco Philips has said that if the most recent SEIS is questioned, delayed or denied, the project will most likely be abandoned. Perhaps good news!
