Key Issue: Climate Change
Activity Type: Advocacy (rallies, lobbying, meeting decision makers, letters/calls/emails)
Key Partners: COGCC now called Energy and Carbon Management Commission and Colorado Governor Polis’ Office

Short Description of Activity

At the Cortez Chamber of Commerce- I learned about Kinder- Morgan’s plans to store carbon by leaving it in the ground. New technology means it supposedly won’t make it’s way back to the surface and back into the atmosphere. ECMC also favors “green hydrogen”. I advocated for transition to renewables and found out ECMC was funded by the fossil fuel industry and figured that’s why they want to keep fossil fuels going.

At the CO and Small Town Listening Session Zoom meeting about climate change in our area-
I got to advocate for the Green Amendment as a solution to climate change effects in the Four Corners for haf an hour. I later thanked Megan for the meeting and sent her an article about how students want to see action to mitigate the effects of climate change. I asked her to ask Governor Polis if he’s ready for a Green Amendment. She updated with a list of ideas collected around the state but told me that the political solutions would be handled separately.

Reflection/Evaluation

Both meetings came to my email so I guess our 4Corners Broadband environmental interest and concern is getting out there. It amazes me how few people show up to these meetings, whether in person or by Zoom. I’m thinking that attending Hickenlooper’s Town Halls and all of the commenting we do, is getting my Broadband email address out there. I also hear from local organizations that they don’t advertise working on climate change mitigation preferring environmental stewardship. Just shows how much they need us around here.
