Short Description of Activity
Redwood Broads had our first meeting at Coffee Bazaar in Guerneville on the last Wednesday of September. We were joined by Maureen Forney and some of her Coast to Crest Broads who helped us discuss forming our new broadband and planning our next event. After chatting and coffee we drove up road to Armstrong Redwoods State Nature Reserve and walked in to the Forest Theater for an author event. New Redwood Broads Nina Lowery and Beth Lamb (also docents at the park) gave a quick redwood ecology and park history tour as we walked. We even picked up some potential new Broads along the way.
Author and activist Greg King read from his new book “The Ghost Forest: Racists, Radicals, and Real Estate in the California Redwoods” and answered questions from the audience. Mr. King describe his passion for the ancient giants of the Redwood Forest starting when he grew up in Guerneville near the Armstrong Redwoods. He even graduated from elementary school in the Forest Theater where the event took place. The theater at Armstrong Park surrounded by Redwood Giants was the perfect setting for an evening talk about forest conservation and preservation. The reading was well attended with an audience of all ages including some of veterans of the old Redwood Wars. Although part of the radical Earth First movement in his younger days Mr. King now supports nonviolent protest.
The book was sold at the event and Mr. King signed them with the message “Look up”. I can’t wait to read it.
Redwood Broads Meeting and attendance at an
Reflection/Evaluation
Such a fun event and so thankful to Maureen for showing up and introducing me to people. The goal was to see what the interest of local broads are. Unfortunately only a few responded and showed up but it is a start. I need to make more phone calls to engage members.
