Short Description of Activity
We had six broads meet in a mini-broadwalk at Shoshone Village to learn more about the Amargosa Basin National Monument. While there we met Susan Sorrells, President, and Cam Mayer, Program Director, for Friends of the Amargosa Basin, and Patrick Donnelly, Center for Biological Diversity. Susan gave us a tour of the pupfish ponds and vole habitat. We also went on a great birding excursion led by a nest spotter. Phainopepla were all the rage this week. We went to the China Ranch Date Farm, where the Amargosa River also flows and hiked and had a date shake there. We also went to Ash Meadow and visited the Devils Hole and Amargosa pupfish, and the Amargosa Speckled Dace. There are about 10 or 12 already-designated wilderness areas here that might be incorporated into a national monument.
Reflection/Evaluation
It was great. We had fun, camped, sang songs, hiked, birdwatched, went to the museum, met people, and learned a lot.
