Short Description of Activity
Co-leaders attended a Western Institute of Lifelong Learning class focusing on the Gila Wilderness Centennial – the first designated wilderness area. Part of the program was via living history mode featuring a fellow playing the role of Aldo Leopold. In addition, several of our broadband members attended portions of the Natural History of the Gila Symposium. This symposium kicked off the ongoing 2024 events in celebration of our first wilderness 100 years ago – and in our “backyard”.
Reflection/Evaluation
Attending the class and symposium was helpful as it provided ideas for our Gila Wilderness celebration themed retreat later this year. Also, relevant and useful information was gained by attending symposium sessions, ranging from natural and cultural topics of the Greater Gila area. One of the highlights was a workshop which provided one of our members with an opportunity for networking with academics, nonprofits, and federal agencies about grazing problems as a contributor to climate change and resiliency issues in southwest New Mexico and southeast AZ. It provided us with applicable information and more ideas regarding our monitoring and advocacy regarding livestock grazing within Gila Natl. Forest.
