Short Description of Activity
Cascade Volcanoes March monthly meeting held at the Kennedy School with speaker Heidi Cody, Southwest Washington Community Organizer for the Washington Conservation Action organization, talking on the issues of the BioMass plant being built in the Longview WA area and its environmental effects.
Followed by updates on current issues, upcoming Broadwalks, hikes and events for the Cascade Volcanoes.
Reflection/Evaluation
Heidi’s talk was very interesting covering the environmental impacts both locally and globally producing wood pellets to burn as fuel, and the sanctioning this means of fuel as a replacement for coal by the Paris Accord. For countries needing to meet the carbon reduction goals it has been granted that burning wood pellets is an alternative to coal. Drax is the company spear heading this development, a UK company and the UK one of the biggest receivers of the pellets along with Japan and the Netherlands. The cost and fuel to produce and to transport the pellets along with the environmental impacts on air quality and noise pollution is compounded along with the threat to the forests, especially mature and old growth.
There was good discussion and interest.
Two new Broads attended and were very pleased with what our program provided.
