Short Description of Activity
Field Checking Training with Jim Oliver
Reflection/Evaluation
We met at 360 coffee on Ward Road in Vancouver and carpooled out to the site in the Yacolt Burn area called Dendrophobia timber sale. Roxie, Barb, Cloudy, Rosanne, Laurie, Kate and Nancy attended. We bushwhacked up a steep terrain and measured several large trees using diameter tape. We also took photos of the trees and described the understory plants. We did not note any seeps or springs. The bushwahacking was tough and several of us came out with scrapes and cuts from the bushes. We also noted the types of trees: DF, WH, RC and numbered them in descending order of prevalence. Our notes and data sheet is attached. We will need to take our more of our group and train them in the coming weeks and months.
This project is going to be a learning experience for us. We recommend having at least 3 people at a time during a site visit for safety reasons. The risk of injury also appears to be moderate since we are climbing over logs and things. I made a few notes for the group and attached them as well. We have 3 more sites to do by ourselves. I was able to get everyone into the ONYX app as well as AVENZA. The other apps will take some practice and review. I am glad we had Bondi with us as she has had experience doing this .
